procedures of teaching

During my first time of teaching, I started by introducing myself first. Then, I told them about the class rules and asked them to stand and copy the dance steps on the video. I started playing the video and i also copied the dance steps on the video so that the students will also be motivated to copy the dance steps knowing that their teacher is doing it too. When i taught in the Philippines, I always let my students have a warm up exercises first before we start our lesson so that they would be energized in class and not feel sleepy that is why i adapted it in my class in SD Muhammadiyah. Before we start with our lesson, we always have a dance exercise.

The students in the class know how to speak in English that is why I was able to teach the class using English. The only problem is that they are not that fluent in English so there is still a minimal struggle in communicating with the students.

I always prepare a Powerpoint presentation for the class to have a visual understanding of the lesson. I opened it after finishing the quick dance exercise with my students. I started my discussion by asking them if they have an idea about the topic that we will discussing for that day. Some of them knows the topic while some still have no idea about the topic. My first topic was about heat transfer. I make sure that i am not the only one talking so i make sure to ask the students about the things related to my lesson so that they would be able to share their ideas to their classmates too. In that way,  I am not the only source of learning but the students are able to share their knowledge as well. It's always a fun and interactive discussion because the students are very participative during class discussion.

After finishing my discussion, I asked the students to form 6 groups. They had a problem choosing their members so I asked them to go back to their seats and we will just have a counting so that it will be more organized and faster to form groups. They sat with their group mates and I told them that we will have an activity wherein they have to plan a role play showing at least one of the methods of heat transfer. After the allotted time given, I asked them to perform their role play one by one but due to time constraint, some groups were not able to show their role play.

time management and organizing events

A teacher must be very good at time management and organizing events because if not, there will be a problem in finishing the discussion on time which means that the plans for a certain learning time will be useless since it will not all be accomplished if the time would not be managed well. I managed my time by referring to the lesson plan that i've made for a certain theme/subject. Through it, i will be able to have an overview of what's going to happen during the 60 minutes allotted time per theme/subject. It was really hard to ensure that all the planned activities will be implemented in the given time. Due to the short time, there are times when I fail to give them individual assessment. Nonetheless, I still make sure that before the 60 minutes end, i have an activity that could assess the students' knowledge about our topic even though the individual assessment can't be done.

problem solving

I honestly was not able to encounter problems inside the classroom with regards to their behavior and attitude because they are all very respectful and behaved. The only problem that I encounter is the language barrier. Although, they were taught English since Kindergarten, majority of them still can't speak in English and it is really a problem because communicating with the students is very important. Good thing is that there is a google translator which saved me during my entire stay in Indonesia. When I had a problem communicating with them, I tried using body movements or sign language so they could understand what i'm trying to say. Aside from that, we also have a Bahasa Indonesia class every Friday which helped us learn more about their language. Aside from that, there were no other problems faced during the discussion because the students are all very smart and participative.

classroom management

Having an effective classroom management is vital because it helps keep the students organized, focused and productive. No matter how prepared a teacher is, if she/he doesn't know how to manage the class, it will all be put into waste. After introducing myself, I told the class about the class rules which includes respecting each other which simply means that if someone is talking, you should not talk too unless otherwise you have a question, you can simply raise your hand and wait for the teacher to recognize you.

As far as I can remember, the only problem I had when it comes to managing the class was during the grouping for the activity. They were all excited to go to their group's place so the class became rowdy for awhile.
